State schools are funded by area by the 32 local authorities in Scotland.
Parents can choose what schools children go to, but this will depend on availability of places.
Normally the closest school is favoured.
Stages of schooling in Scotland

Financial assistance
State schools are free in Scotland and depending on family income, children may also qualify for free school meals and a clothing allowance.
Children staying on at school up to 18 years of age may also qualify for an attendance allowance.
