Cycling
For as long as the Scots have been cycling, they’ve been producing world-class champions. The most recent of these is Sir Chris Hoy MBE, Scotland’s most successful Olympian, who won three gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The internationally recognised governing body for cycling in Scotland is Scottish Cycling. The organisation covers BMX, Cycle, Speedway, Cyclo-Cross, Mountain Bike, Road and Track events and competition across the country.
Scotland’s cycling proficiency scheme
Scotland is a nation of cyclists. Scottish school children often take part in a Cycling Proficiency programme. This takes usually place when the child is around 10 or 11 and, as well as getting comfortable and used to riding a bike, school pupils learn cycling rules, road safety and basic bicycle maintenance.
Mountain Biking
With spectacular rolling hills and breathtaking views, the Scottish countryside is one of the world’s top mountain biking destinations. There are numerous mountain biking courses, spread throughout the country. The largest of these, Glentress, is one of the best mountain biking centres in the world. It’s 26 miles from Edinburgh, 53 miles from Glasgow and 88 miles from Carlisle.
With names like Learnie Red Rock, Witches’ Trails and the Fire Tower Trail, Scotland’s downhill mountain biking tracks offer some of the most exciting runs, anywhere.
Road Racing in Scotland
Road Racing is also popular in Scotland and there are many clubs around the country that are dedicated to hot wheeling it over tarmac. They’re easy to join and there’s usually no minimum skill level required. All that’s asked of you is that you know the rules of the road and have had experience of riding in a group.
On 23 July 2014, Glasgow will play host to the XX Commonwealth Games. The new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, due to open in 2012 in the city’s east end, will play host to the world’s top track cyclists and provide world-class cycling facilities for generations to come.
Whichever cycling discipline it is that you’re interested in, there will be club to cater to it. Scottish cycling clubs are always open to new members and many of them have bikes that can be loaned to beginners.
