Chetan Solanki, India

""

Chartered accountant Chetan came to Glasgow from Mumbai at the end of 2009. He now manages part of the Morgan Stanley’s Financial Reporting team for Fund Services both here and in India.

TalentScotland talks to Chetan about his work and living in Scotland’s most multicultural city.

How did you come to work for Morgan Stanley?

After gaining a chartered accountancy qualification in India, I joined Morgan Stanley in its Fund Services office in Mumbai. It was a dream job for me as Morgan Stanley is such a respected brand in financial services and it gave me many opportunities that come with working for a multinational company. I joined the new financial reporting team in India which was exciting.

Then I was promoted to a managerial role and was transferred to Glasgow to develop and oversee the teams in Scotland and India and gain more client exposure.

What do you like about the role?

I like working for hedge fund clients as it always keeps you on your toes. Every client has different demands and every day presents new challenges. You really feel like you are part of the news story every day.

What do you like about living in Glasgow?

The countryside is so beautiful. There is so much greenery that it makes me feel at home. I actually find it very soothing and restful here. My wife Shilpa and I enjoy living in Glasgow. We find it a multicultural place and there is a local temple where we can worship.

The Scottish people are nice and helpful and it’s easy and safe to travel around the city, even if you work late in the evening. Here I can get to work in only 15 minutes so I don’t miss my old commute in Mumbai which took over an hour!
