Main Responsibilities:

  • Use and application of standard principles, theories and concepts in the field is required as well as the possible requirement of working knowledge of other related disciplines.
  • Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • Contribute to the origination or direction of experiments through the development of methodologies, review, analyze, interpret data and prepare reports.
  • May be actively involved with technical consultants.
  • Understanding of overall objectives of the business and the ability to change priorities to suit them.
  • Plan and prioritise work in the immediate work situation.
  • Provide sound solutions to clearly defined problems/issues which require a grasp of theory and trained analysis.
  • Understanding of potential costs of final products and presenting of schemes to reduce /control these costs.
  • Understanding the company's manufacturing processes and designing products for good manufacturing practices.
  • Address problems that require the adaptation of existing methodologies with high-level analysis and evaluation of issues.
  • Evaluation of available options and implementation of the best course of action.
  • Make mostly autonomous technical decisions.
  • Provide a service to customers by ensuring that the detailed specification of products meets the requirements of the market.
  • Agree service standards (service level agreements - timescales, quality etc) with internal and external customers ensuring that those standards are maintained in the work of teams in R&D.
  • Work with timescales that are consistent with their annual objectives to encompass short term thinking and planning.
  • Challenge the technical output of teams to ensure they are coherent and focused on meeting business objectives.
  • Practice technical skills and perform experimentation at a high standard of safety, proficiency and efficiency and produce appropriate and timely written documentation.
  • Contribute to the intellectual property strategy for the project that they are involved in.
  • Provide detailed input to annual budgeting cycle.

Skills / Experience

Skills Requirement

Essential:

  • Pro-E experience (ability to navigate models, rather than design).
  • Knowledge of materials and their properties - Experience in plastics and moulding is essential.
  • Ability to create concepts that meet design requirements.
  • Transfer of design into manufacture.

Desirable:

  • Statistical analysis / methods & practical application.
  • Understand and apply DFMA Principles.
  • Tolerance, stack-up and stress analysis.
  • Requirements translation, Verification & Validation planning.
  • Risk Mgmt tools for project and technical.

Person Fit:

  • Self aware.
  • Strong/Confident personality.
  • Ready to take ownership and challenge others.
  • Passionate about the subject matter - Focussed on personal development - An interest in staying on top of technology innovations.
  • Customer focussed and comfortable with the "hands-off" vendor management approach to the development - BUT capable of being hands-on when required and close enough to the technology to remain credible at all times.

Education Requirements

Essential:

  • B.Sc. or B. Engineering Degree plus relevant experience.

Desirable:

  • Post-graduate qualification preferred.
  • Masters degree plus relevant experience or doctorate.

  • Ability to apply theory and practice from other technical fields to the problems in hand.
  • Ability to determine personal priorities to achieve short and long term objectives.
  • Ability to integrate related technical activities.
  • Ability to exert influence amongst peers within the relevant specialist field.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively over a broad range of issues including the conveyance of abstract concepts as well as factual and/or technical information.
  • Communicate difficult concepts to an audience having differing levels of knowledge and understanding.
  • Experience in mass-product devices.
  • Ability to work in teams.
  • Deep technical knowledge.
