Talk me through the history of INSIDE Secure

The parent company is based in Aix en Provence near Marseille. Originally it was a start-up focused on Contactless Smartcard chip technology. The company name was originally INSIDE Contactless and when the parent company had successfully expanded its product portfolio, including the acquisition of the design centre in East Kilbride in October 2010, the name was changed to INSIDE Secure.

We started out as part of Motorola, over 20 years ago when we were involved in the birth of the smartcard industry. Our Scottish team bring many years of experience in developing semiconductor chips for electronic security for bank cards, mobile phone SIM cards, Pay TV, electronic passports and ID cards, amongst others. We’re now a central part of the product development activity of INSIDE Secure.

What services/products do you provide?

INSIDE Secure is a leading designer, developer and supplier of semiconductors, embedded software and platforms for secure transactions and digital security. INSIDE mobile NFC, secure payment, and digital security products provide security for a wide range of information processing, storage and transmission applications.

Our customers are found in a wide range of markets including mobile payment, identification documents, access control, transit, electronic device manufacturing, pay television and mobile service operators.

What are the benefits of being based in Scotland?

We have a critical mass of talented and experienced people that would be hard to establish from scratch. There is no doubt that being in Scotland has real advantages. There are excellent local universities and a pool of experienced Scottish engineers located round the world who are often looking for a career move back home.

Being a security technology company it is a big advantage to be based in a county which is stable and secure and has a strong reputation for technological innovation and financial services.

What kind of organisation is it to work for?

The period leading up to the acquisition by INSIDE Secure was stressful, we didn’t know what would happen to our team in East Kilbride but it worked out well.

The company prides itself on teamwork and openness and it’s been easy for us to integrate. As we’re a product development and technology company, most of our people are engineers and are motivated by technology and innovation.

Today, there’s an opportunity to work with challenging state of the art technology, in a rapidly expanding market. This year there have been 7 new additions to the team in East Kilbride.

What does the future hold for INSIDE Secure?

It’s difficult to predict the future of the semiconductor industry but we’re investing heavily in R & D for digital security and Near Field Communication Technology and our investments are being rewarded by strong market growth.
