Student placements and internships

Could your business benefit from the insights, ideas and enthusiasm of a postgraduate student? Scottish universities’ MBA and MSc courses play host to some of the country’s brightest minds and students are often available for short or long-term company placements, offering a high-quality, low-cost resource for a range of business projects.

While MBA students can offer a broad, strategic business view, MSc students are often able to provide a more focused perspective within a particular area of expertise.

Companies working with Scotland’s postgraduate students can find candidates with a real understanding of the business as a whole, as well as excellent research skills and familiarity with a range of analytical tools. Most students are also confident across a variety of Microsoft Office applications, which can be useful for organising data and preparing presentations.

Placements can last anything from one day to ten months, and can be structured in a variety of ways to suit both the company and the student. Costs are negotiable, dependent on the type and amount of work being undertaken, although for some projects only travel and project expenses will need to be covered.

University of Edinburgh Business School

At the University of Edinburgh Business School, all MBA students take part in a strategic client consultancy project in the spring, and have the option of conducting a research project with an employer over the summer. A number of Edinburgh’s MSc programmes also include company projects, focusing on topics including taking your business to an emerging market or understanding the opportunities in the carbon markets.

University of Strathclyde Business School

MBA students at the University of Strathclyde Business School typically come with an average of eight or nine years’ experience in business.  Students must complete a two-three month project during June to September as part of their course and most use this as an opportunity to work with a company.  This means providing practical consultancy, with implementable outcomes, on a range of issues, e.g. marketing/branding; business growth; supply chain/distribution, etc, at strategic level. Some students are available for part-time assignments on an on-going basis.

The university’s many international MBA students can be particularly useful for companies looking to expand into new international markets.
