Eric Dodd, National Projects Manager at Community Energy Scotland talks about his experience of employing a graduate through the TalentScotland Graduate Placement Programme.

One of the first graduates to be placed as part of the programme is Niall Carroll, an MSc Renewable Energy Systems and the Environment graduate from Strathclyde University.

He started his placement in November 2010 at Community Energy Scotland in Dingwall, a social enterprise dedicated to sustainable community energy development.

In order to become less dependent on public sector contracts and to broaden its income base, Community Energy Scotland has employed Niall to work on a business development project for one year, aiming to create an additional revenue stream.

What benefits have you had from employing a graduate?

By employing Niall we have employed a self starter who can quickly grasp what we are looking for and work on his own initiative to develop the job.

What piece of work is the graduate involved in?

Niall is working on how we can develop the performance monitoring we do for community projects and begin to earn an income from our activities.

What knowledge and skills has the graduate brought to your organisation?

Niall has brought some recent academic knowledge to the organisation so coupled with on the ground practical knowledge from our own experiences should help Niall and our organisation develop.
