Employing refugees
An Asylum Seeker who has been granted Refugee status by the UK Border Agency is granted an initial period of five years leave to enter or remain in the United Kingdom. During these five years they are allowed to work in the United Kingdom.
Asylum Seekers who are refused Refugee status by the UK Border Agency may however be granted Humanitarian Protection or Discretionary Leave.
Humanitarian Protection is normally granted for an initial period of five years and Discretionary Leave can be granted for up to three years. They may work during this time.
Asylum Seekers awaiting the outcome of their Asylum application or who have been refused or have become appeals rights exhausted are not allowed to work in the UK except in exceptional circumstances.
