Moving Checklist

A checklist for helping to make the move:

Before moving

• Choose an area to live in. If possible visit different areas or take advice from people already living there
• Register with estate agents, rental agents, Solicitor’s Property Centres to receive lists of suitable homes.
• Choose a home to rent or buy
• Ensure all necessary Visas or Work Permits have been applied for if moving from overseas
• Gather your personal records, medical, dental, children's school reports, motor vehicle insurance experience and banking references if moving from overseas
• Get quotes from different movers. Confirm your moving dates and schedule with your chosen mover and confirm your insurance requirements
• Make your travel arrangements if moving long distance or from overseas
• Redirect your mail
• Mail change of address cards. List of possible recipients: Bank, Building Society, Insurance companies, Gas, Electricity and Water Boards, Telephone company, Credit cards, Driving Licence Authorities, store cards and accounts, employer, doctor, dentist, schools, mail order accounts, newspaper, magazine subscriptions, tax office, friends and relatives
• Obtain details of new school dress codes and book material. If a uniform is required place an order with the school so that the items are available upon your arrival
• If your children are members of National or International organisations such as Scouts, Girl Guides etc, find out the nearest group and make the appropriate arrangements for your child to join
• Organise final bills at present house and connection at the new property for gas service, water service and telephone services
• Stock up on prescriptive medicine
• Collect items from repairers, cleaners
• Return library books, borrowed or rented items
• Cancel deliveries, e.g. newspaper, milk, etc.

On arrival

• Open a bank account in a local bank
• Register with a GP
• Register with a dentist

• Bank Statements - for the three months prior to travelling
• Introductory letter from your bank manager
• Credit card records
• Proof of permanent address
• Passport
• Travel/Work Visas
• Birth Certificate
• International Driver's license
• Travel/Health Insurance Documents
• Copies of your doctor/dentist medical records
• Vaccination certificates (where relevant)
• Current CV and professional qualification certificates
• Up to date address book of contacts back home
