It employs around 8,000 academic, academic-related, clerical, technical and manual staff. The University has a turnover in excess of £550 million and operates on a number of sites, with the main locations being in the city (south side) and at the King's Buildings some 2km to the south. There is also a substantial grouping at Easter Bush, near Roslin, some 11km to the south, just beyond the city boundary.

The University of Edinburgh is one of the largest unitary universities in Britain, covering as wide a range of academic disciplines as any British university. The University's strategy is research-led, and this attracts a substantial volume of external funding. It attracts students from over 120 countries around the world and is in the Top 20 international universities.

The University has three (non-residential)Colleges: Humanities and Social Science, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, and Science and Engineering, each headed by a Vice-Principal, together with three Support Groups providing central services. In size, the Colleges are similar to several UK Universities.

The chief executive officer of the University is the Principal. A number of Vice-Principals (the heads of the three Colleges and others who have cross-cutting responsibilities) support him. The University Secretary is Secretary to the University Court (the chief governing body) and to the Senatus Academicus (the chief academic body). While the University's central support services are provided by the three Support Groups, considerable activity (and its support) has been devolved to the three Colleges. Significant links exist between the central support services and the College Support Teams.

The College of Science and Engineering is one of the largest science and engineering groupings in the UK, larger than some universities, with about 2,000 staff and more than 7,500 students. The College consists of seven academic Schools, with several specialist units and interdisciplinary centres. The Schools are:

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise more than 20% of the College's output was accorded the top world-leading rating and all the Schools are at or close to the top of their disciplines in the UK. The College has particularly close links with Heriot-Watt University in Engineering and Mathematics and with the University of St Andrews in Chemistry, and it participates with a number of Scottish universities in research pooling initiatives across the different disciplines.

In addition to the Schools, the College houses a number of Centres for research and innovation. These include the Scottish Microelectronics Centre, the Centre for Systems Biology, and the Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions, and, with the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, the Centre for Infectious Diseases and the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine.

The College has published its Strategy and Development Plan 2009-2014, which provides further information
