University of Abertay School of Computing and Creative Technologies

The School of Computing and Creative Technologies (CCT) at the University of Abertay in Dundee (UAD) was established in 2004 following extensive restructuring of the Computing and Engineering provision.

UAD offered the world's first MSc in Computer Games Technology in 1997 and Europe's first full undergraduate degree in Computer Games Technology, and is currently ranked by Skillset (the UK government/industry sector skills council for audio visual industries) as offering the best degree programmes in the UK in Computer Games and Computer Arts. CCT brings together world-class expertise in teaching, research and consultancy and an international reputation for innovation and collaboration within the computer games technology and computer arts sectors.

In addition to the Computer Games and Arts provision, CCT provides students with an opportunity to work at the cutting-edge of subject areas such as Adaptive Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Virtual Reality, 3D Graphics, Network Systems and Human-Computer Interaction. CCT is regarded as a leader in Adaptive Systems, Bioinformatics, Ethical Hacking and Countermeasures, and offers high quality teaching and research programmes in Software Engineering and Information and Knowledge Engineering, as well as Mathematical Modelling and Visualisation. There are presently over 1000 students enrolled at CCT.

CCT expertise is also helping to train a new generation of Computer Games Programmers in Turkey as a result of an agreement with the Izmir University of Economics (IUE) which from 2009 will link a two-year Masters degree at IUE with UAD Masters degrees in Computer Games Technology and Adaptive Systems Engineering. CCT also has similar collaborative links with universities in China, Canada, India, Ireland, Malaysia, Australia and the USA.

CCT has also just won Skillset Media Academy status and funding which will help in the development of its National Centre of Excellence in Computer Games Education.

UAD also runs Dare to be Digital, a unique industry-backed video games development competition for students at universities and art colleges. The competition invites teams of artistic and technology students to develop their games ideas to prototype stages with full support. Dare to be Digital provides a prime opportunity for new-start businesses in the creative industries, and this year the Dare winners were also the recipients of the “new talent” BAFTA award.
