Edinburgh and Kyoto sign stem cell MoU

“We anticipate that this will mark the beginning of substantive joint research projects, contributing to the advancement of regenerative medicine in both countries” – Sir Ian Wilmut

The world-leading research into stem cells and regenerative medicine being pioneered at the University of Edinburgh MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine (MRC-CRM) will be further enhanced thanks to a collaborative research agreement with Kyoto University in Japan.

Research first

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between MRC-CRM and the Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS) at Kyoto University, and is the first of its kind with an institute in Japan.

Commenting on the MoU, MRC-CRM Chairman Sir Ian Wilmut said: "We anticipate that this will mark the beginning of substantive joint research projects, contributing to the advancement of regenerative medicine in both countries."

iCeMS Director Professor Norio Nakatsuji added: "Both institutions are already well known for stem cell research and medical engineering, and with this agreement in place we will now be closely linked internationally and across disciplines."

Edinburgh BioQuarter

MRC-CRM is part of the Edinburgh BioQuarter, a joint venture between the University of Edinburgh and Scottish Enterprise that will consolidate Scotland’s reputation as a world leader in biomedical science.

It will become home to more than 1,000 life science researchers combining some of the best medical research in the world with access to the clinical expertise of two of the city’s major hospitals. It also includes dedicated bio-incubator facilities to help support and develop new companies commercialising the ideas generated at the BioQuarter.

Scottish Development International Chief Executive Anne MacColl said: "As a nation, Scotland has significant expertise in stem cells due to our world-class universities and dynamic life sciences industry and we are proud to be in a position to exchange knowledge and best practices in this field with Japan.

“Stimulating collaborative projects between Scottish and Japanese experts is a key priority of Scottish Development International and will bring benefit to both countries."
