Chanelle Miliani, Radiator
What is your background?
I’m from Shotts in North Lanarkshire and studied for a BSc with Honours in Sport and Recreaction Management at the University of Edinburgh.
During my time on the course it became apparent that I enjoyed the business modules most, in particular marketing, and so during my third year I found a marketing placement with a company which confirmed my interest in that area.
Why did you apply for the Graduate Placement Programme?
As fourth year was quite time-consuming, I wanted to wait until I’d finished university before applying for jobs. I found that by that point, though, a lot of the graduate deadlines for the 2011 intake had past, or I was going to have to move from Scotland which I didn’t feel I was ready to do.
I went to a graduate recruitment fair in Edinburgh and found out about the Graduate Placement Programme. What’s good about TalentScotland is that they offer various opportunities for graduates with different start dates, and it meant that I could also stay in Scotland.
It was through them that I got my current position of Sales and Marketing Assistant with Radiator, a digital marketing agency.
How have you benefited from the programme?
The Graduate Placement Programme has allowed me to broaden my experience by working with a digital marketing agency.
The two-day training course also meant that I was able to meet other people in similar fields and we were able to share our experiences. It was comforting to know that there were other people in the same position as me.
What advice would you give to other graduates?
Don’t give up! When you’re looking for jobs, a lot of employers require a minimum of one or two years’ experience so it’s easy to lose belief in yourself, but there are graduate programmes like TalentScotland around that can help and are willing to see your potential.
