James Williamson BSW Timber

James Williamson has been working with BSW Timber

James joined BSW Timber at their Boat of Garten site in November 2010 for 12 months as part of the TalentScotland Graduate Placement Programme.

What is your background?

Originally from Falkirk, I went to the University of Strathclyde to do a BEng (Hons) Degree in Chemical and Process Engineering. Upon graduating in July 2010, I was awarded the A.W.Scott Prize for best overall performance.

Why did you apply to the TalentScotland Graduate Placement Programme?

When I came across the job post for the TalentScotland programme I was interested in working for an established company alongside experienced people who could help me not only to learn new skills and knowledge but to enhance my existing skills.

How have you benefited from the programme?

I have been exposed to the daily operation of the sawmill from a management perspective. In the short time I have been at BSW the company has invested in me with training courses to help me develop in my current role as a Management Trainee. I have also attended a residential training week run by TalentScotland in partnership with Robert Gordon University/University of Strathclyde.

The week away involved a number of classes including business skills, strategic planning, HR, finance and project management. In addition to the classes the course provided an opportunity to network with other graduates from a broad range of industries.

What advice would you give to other graduates?

I would encourage any graduates looking to build upon their university skills and knowledge to consider the TalentScotland Graduate Placement Programme. The experience I have gained so far is invaluable and I have received a high level of support from the management team which has helped me with the transition from university into industry.
