Jenny Sutton, Techxel

What is your background?

I am originally from Dundee. I moved to Glasgow to study for my undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Glasgow. Whilst there, I became increasingly interested in Consumer Psychology. From this spawned my interest in Marketing and I have never looked back. I studied MSc Marketing at the University of Strathclyde which was a very intensive yet rewarding programme.

Why did you apply to the TalentScotland Graduate Placement Programme?

I applied to the TalentScotland programme because I was keen to remain in Scotland. I found that a lot of the jobs I was applying for were being taken by people with years of experience – despite being advertised as entry level positions.

I saw the TalentScotland Graduate Placement Programme as an opportunity to compete for a position with other individuals at a similar point in their career to me. Additionally, I was interested in developing my career in a sector which is growing and prominent in Scotland in order to facilitate my overall career opportunities. This is exactly how it has turned out having secured a position in two technology companies.

How have you benefited from the programme?

I have benefited immensely and I have learned a lot “on the job”. Every day I am researching and learning new things as I do them. I have had the opportunity to take responsibility for creating the marketing plan for two companies. I have also had the chance to develop my copywriting skills for a variety of mediums including press releases, collateral, white papers and the web.

What advice would you give to other graduates?

Persevere. Sometimes you are met with a lot of rejection in the current economic climate and it is important not to give up or compromise if you are passionate about what you want to do. Keep working towards your goals and you will get there eventually.
