Inverness

Inverness is Scotland’s city in the Highlands, with a range of great shops on either side of the River Ness, which flows through the centre.

Take a walk down the city’s High Street and you’ll find a range of well-known chain stores, specialist outdoor centres and traditional Scottish shops catering for locals and visitors alike. Inverness may be on a smaller scale than other Scottish cities, but the Highland capital certainly holds its own in the shopping stakes.

Getting to Inverness

Inverness train station is in the middle of the city centre and next door to the main bus station. The substantial Old Town Rose Street Car Park, is within walking distance of both. So, whether you’re driving into town, taking the bus or the train, you’re always within reach of the city’s shops.

The pedestrianised High Street is safe and welcoming and in the summer months you’ll often find European traders, street performers and Highland pipers playing to passersby.  A popular local farmers’ market attracts crowds on the first Saturday of every month.

Inverness has a number of outdoor specialists, stocking essential outdoor wear to the numerous hill walkers and climbers that regularly pass through the city. One of Inverness‘ oldest sporting goods suppliers, J Graham and Co is has been selling shooting, fishing and outdoor clothing and equipment since as far back as 1857.

The Victorian Market

Originally built in 1870, the ornate splendour of the Victorian era is home to around 41 shops. The covered arcade sits in the centre of the Old Town and links some of Inverness’ busiest streets. The Victorian Market includes a mixture of fine food retailers, a café, florist, antique shops, town merchants and specialist jewellery shops.  There’s even a bagpipe supply shop. The market is easily accessed from Academy Street in the city centre and is particularly popular with tourists.

The Eastgate Centre

The Eastgate Centre is Inverness’ flagship shopping mall and is home to a large number of national high street chains. There are around 60 different units in the centre including HMV, Waterstones, Argos and Starbucks. Marks & Spencer and Debenhams are the two largest stores in the centre.

Supermarket shopping is available centrally from the Co-operative and Morrisons, with a small Tesco just over the river. Tesco is also present at the city’s two out-of-town retail parks, located at Inshes (near Raigmore Hospital) and off the A96, en route to Inverness Airport.
