Independent schools
Scotland is well known for its high-calibre private, also known as independent, schools. Independent schools charge fees and don't receive any public funds and are governed and managed by private trusts.
All independent schools are registered with the Scottish Government Education Department and receive regular inspections by HM Inspectorate of Education.
Who do independent schools take?
Many independent schools take pupils of all ages and provide pre-school, primary and secondary education.
Others take pupils only within a certain age range and are either primary or secondary.
Independent school bursary schemes
Some independent schools offer scholarships and bursary awards for pupils who need help to pay fees.
Often these awards are provided to help students with talent in a particular subject, such as music or art.
Independent schools have the privilege of their own management, which allows them to implement a changing and bespoke curriculum to reach their own goals.
Private school fees
In general you must pay to attend an independent school.
The teachers are well qualified and most are registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.
Independent schools focus on the growth and development of each pupil.
The individual school will have its own ethos, however they all share the view that the curriculum and environment should be positive and encourage growth.
