On 1 August 2006 The Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences was formed through the merger of five academic departments (currently RAE rated 5) and by 2009 will be completely rehoused in an impressive new building.

The Institute currently comprises 73 academic staff, 70 research staff, 75 technical staff, 15 clerical / secretarial staff and 6 administrative staff.

There are five major research groups within the Institute:

  • Infection & Immunity
  • Cell Biology
  • Integrative Mammalian Biology
  • Biomedicinal Chemistry & Drug Delivery
  • Pharmaceutical Care & Public Health

The research environment is strongly interdisciplinary with each group committed to expanding its research profile and that of the Institute.

State-of-the-art research equipment and facilities include the Centre for Biophotonics, the molecular modelling suite equipped with cluster and GRID facilities, the Solid State Research laboratory housing four single-crystal and powder X-ray diffractometers and robotics, the Cancer Research UK Formulation Unit with cGMP facilities, a 400 MHz NMR spectrometer, and cell culture, fermentation, molecular biology and drug formulation laboratories.

Research capacity is extended through strong collaborative links with external HEIs, industry and hospitals. The Institute delivers the flagship MPharm undergraduate pharmacy degree which involves a collaborative MPharm programme with the International Medical University, Malaysia. There are also a variety of well-established BSc degrees covering Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Immunology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Biomedical Sciences & Psychology, Bioscience with Teaching, Forensic Biology, and Sport & Exercise Science are available, many of which are Joint Honours degrees. A new BSc in Pharmacology with Industrial Placement had its first intake in 2007.

Postgraduate MSC degrees cover both on campus and delivered as distance learning:

  • Food Biotechnology and Food Science & Microbiology
