The University of Aberdeen boasted the first chair of medicine in the English speaking world. This tradition of innovation in medicine and medical science has been maintained and the University of Aberdeen is home to a thriving medical school which provides high quality teaching and training and excellent opportunities for research.

Departments within the School of Medicine include:

Research is centred around 5 principal areas, or themes, within the Schools of Medicine and Medical Sciences. These broad themes are:

  • Immunity and Inflammation (which encompasses research groups in oncology and vascular medicine as well as in immunology)
  • Microbiology
  • Cell Biology
  • Bone and Musculoskeletal
  • Neuroscience

Among these themes are Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 5 and 5* research groups. The clinicians and scientists of international quality within our research themes are also central to the delivery of the broad range of postgraduate taught courses on offer.
