Jingjing Liu, Chinese National, Living and Studying in Scotland
Nǐ hǎo, I’m Jingjing Liu and I moved to Scotland from China in 2019 to study Statistics with Data Science at the University of Edinburgh which has a good reputation for AI and Data science. Edinburgh is also a highly regarded technology centre and there are many opportunities.
Studying in Scotland
I was attracted to study here because of Scotland’s long and historic past, its magnificent and amazing buildings and it is home to many of the world’s oldest universities at the forefront of leading research. I was also fortunate to achieve a Saltire scholarship from the Scottish Government; the tuition fee waiver eased the financial burden on my family.
I enjoy studying in Scotland because I am learning about the most advanced and new technologies here. The lecturers and tutors are very knowledgeable and are more than happy to answer any questions that I may have.
I have also enjoyed some fun activities including the Edinburgh Festival Photo Walk and I experienced my first traditional Burns’ night where I tasted the local food and listened to Scottish folk music, an unforgettable experience.
Living in Scotland
The move to relocate to Scotland went very smoothly and the university organised a welcome week. Some of the banks attended the campus and I was able to set up a bank account very easily.
I really enjoy my life here, especially a sunny day in the Meadows basking in the sunshine with friends surrounded by cherry blossom blooming. If I get the chance, I want my parents to visit and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
I would definitely recommend moving to Scotland as the people here are very friendly, the countryside is beautiful, and the climate is comfortable.
Scotland during lockdown
The university provided various financial aids during the lockdown period and I found the kindness of people very touching.
One Chinese student who wished to isolate during this period posted a note on her door saying she did not require toilet cleaning services at this time. The cleaner thought the student was in self-isolation, so put a bag of food outside the door. How warm and generous hearted the Scots are!
