Sydney Mukaratirwa, Zimbabwe, Charles River
Hello! I’m Sydney. I moved from Zimbabwe to work at Charles River in Scotland. Scotland has been a really good move for me. And I’d recommend it to others. It’s a wonderful place to explore, experience and develop an exciting career.
Animal pathologist Sydney studied veterinary medicine in his native Zimbabwe then lived in the Netherlands before making the exciting move to Scotland to develop his career. He now works for Charles River and is thoroughly enjoying life in Edinburgh.
Why work in Scotland?
I looked at other jobs in the UK but the opportunity at Charles River in Scotland was the best role for me.
I wanted to specialise and do the right exams - I couldn’t do that in Zimbabwe. Moving to Scotland introduced me to new ways of working and gave me access to training. It’s been a really good move for me and my career.
I’ve found it easy to adapt and I plan to stay in Scotland for a long time. In fact I’d definitely recommend it to others who want to develop their career in an exceptional country.
Working at Charles River
I’m an animal pathologist so I carry out microscopic evaluation of animal tissues to diagnose diseases. There are nine other pathologists in my team and it’s an excellent work environment.
Living in Scotland
The lifestyle in Edinburgh is wonderful. There are so many things I enjoy about being in Scotland – in particular the different sporting activities.
I settled in Scotland much easier than in the Netherlands. I found it quite easy to adapt. Speaking the same language helped.
My family is getting used to me being further away. I still visit Zimbabwe once a year and my family now also comes to visit me here too.
