Thales UK in Glasgow

Thales UK’s Glasgow operation is a global centre of excellence for the design and manufacture of optronic day/night vision equipment and systems. The company is also a key provider of support for critical communications systems for transportation projects in Scotland, and has been involved in every major railway re-signalling project in Scotland over the past 20 years.

The Glasgow business was first established as Barr & Stroud Ltd in 1888. It has been located within the city of Glasgow throughout its history, moving to the Linthouse site in 1992 (opened by HRH Princess Anne in May 1993). It has been the sole supplier of submarine periscopes and masts to the Royal Navy since 1917.

In addition, the Glasgow site performs system engineering and support activities for projects such as the new Airdrie to Bathgate Rail link and the Paisley Corridor improvement programme.

In April 2011, the Thales UK optronics business in Glasgow was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise (International Trade), recognising a doubling of export business during 2007/2009. Today, approximately 700 people are employed at the Glasgow site, with over 600 people working for the Optronics business and 20 working for the Transportation business.

We have strong links with schools across West Central Scotland, promoting science and engineering as a career.
