I’m the Managing Director of the Amazon Development Centre in Scotland, which is responsible for devising, creating and growing major features and websites for Amazon worldwide.
Our developers, designers and leaders work in small teams across the company, contributing to Amazon’s systems, which are used by over 237 million active Amazon customer accounts worldwide, over two million active seller accounts and hundreds of thousands of external developers.
What we do
The world’s brightest technology minds come to Amazon to research and develop new technologies that improve the lives of our customers – shoppers, sellers, content creators and developers around the world.
From interactive User Interface design to large-scale distributed systems and machine learning, we do whatever it takes to deliver great experiences for our customers.
The Amazon Development Centre is continuing to grow and we continue to recruit here in Scotland. We’re currently recruiting – you can find details at www.amazondc.com/jobs
What we look for
For software engineering positions we require strong core Computer Science skills – algorithms, data structures, operating systems and distributed systems.
Our engineers typically have a first class degree in Computer Science or a related discipline and will often have a PhD. Relevant technical experience is helpful, including internships.
Other than strong Computer Science skills, we need people who really care about doing the right thing for our customers. You need to enjoy end-to-end ownership. You won’t just be delivering software, you’ll be suggesting product ideas, running the systems you help develop and continually improving them. You’ll also need to work well in a team.
What it’s like to work for Amazon in Scotland
Our freedom to execute effectively against broad, ambitious goals offers boundless opportunities for highly skilled, talented and innovative engineers.
Our saying is ‘Work Hard, Have Fun, Make History’ and with that in mind there are opportunities to progress to very senior technical roles as well as leadership roles here in Edinburgh. Colleagues may also apply for internal transfers to other Amazon locations around the world.
We hire exceptional people
Edinburgh offers access to world-class technical talent. We hire graduates and postgraduates from Scotland’s universities, including Edinburgh University, which came top for Computing Science and Informatics in the UK in the last two Research Assessment Exercises.
Our location next to Waverley Station, Edinburgh’s main railway station, helps us to attract candidates from across the Central Belt of Scotland. And Edinburgh’s reputation as a great international city helps us to attract the best candidates from further afield.
While most of our recruiting efforts are locally focused, we also hire exceptional people from mainland Europe and beyond.
Living in Scotland
Scotland is home for me and I love how the tech sector has grown, enabling me to build an exciting career here. I have a particular fondness for Edinburgh. I’m a keen runner and it’s great to be able to get out at lunchtime, enjoying the views from a lap of Arthur’s Seat.
